Job Description

While this objective will take several seasons, the first season will focus on training and obtaining wildland fire qualifications while helping to implement land management projects and practices under the direct supervision of the Fuels Crew Supervisor. The nature of this work requires considerable physical activity and the ability to follow directions.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reduce accumulated downed wood to decrease the likelihood of a stand-replacing fire.
  • Cutting down trees (falling, limbing, bucking).
  • Fuel brake installation and maintenance.
  • Participate in safety meetings.
  • Inventory and tool maintenance.
  • Use hand tools such as chainsaws, brush cutters, and motorized wheelbarrows to reduce slash and prepare prescribed burn units, felling and clearing hazardous trees, and assist with fire suppression (training provided, no previous experience required).
  • Follow clear directions, communicate effectively with crew members, crew leaders, and staff, and show respect when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, and the community.
  • Spiking out (Camp) for up to seven nights in a wilderness setting: contribute to primary duties at the campsite, including keeping the camp area clean and organizing crew equipment.
  • Fire assignments can last up to 14 days. Living conditions are in the open environment in a camp or the wilderness.
  • Restore and improve wildlife habitat.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and always wear all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Fully and actively participate in paid training and in-field education sessions. Take tests and provide training documentation when completed (tests may be written, verbal, or in the field)
  • Percentage of time spent on labor– 70%, training– 10%, traveling– 5%, hiking– 5%
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including participating in outreach events outside of normal working hours and consenting to media releases for grant reporting, presentations, or publicly accessible media outlets).

Qualifications

1. Current NWCG S-130/190 Wildland Fire Training or capable of obtaining it within 6 months of hire.
2. Possession of a valid California class C driver’s license.
3. Basic first aid
4. Current CPR
5. Six months of arduous outdoor work experience.
6. Must be physically capable of walking and working in uneven, rocky terrain for extended periods in seasonal temperatures below 32°F or exceed 90°F.
7. Able to read and take written tests in English
8. Must be able to bend over, lift, or throw repeatedly.
9. Must be able to lift 65 lbs. continuously.
10. Possess the willingness and ability to work and camp up to seven nights in a row, in a wilderness setting, in all weather conditions.
11. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application submittal.
12. Must be able to communicate and possess excellent interpersonal skills with associates.
13. A physical examination is required every year. In addition, when appropriate, a fitness for duty exam may be required.
14. Ability to pass wildland fire physical fitness qualification test (pack test – arduous – or program equivalent), which requires walking with a 45-pound backpack for 3 miles.15. May be required to work beyond normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Environmental Conditions

Essential and marginal functions require maintaining good physical condition for sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods, and being able to lift, drag, hoist, and carry different types of fire equipment and other objects. It also requires operating motorized vehicles. Requires stamina and physical endurance to sustain prolonged, vigorous physical activity during emergencies. You must have 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses, and you must have the physical ability to get your Personal Protective Equipment on quickly, tie knots, and perform other tasks as needed.
