Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are considered essential for this job classification:

 

1. Performs duties which promote, protect, preserve, and manage all matters relating to Cultural Resources.

2. Performs field inspections, documents findings, and works with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office on recommendations for projects requiring cultural monitoring.

3. Ensures the protection and preservation of cultural resources during pre-development activities.

4. Monitors all ground-disturbing activity on assigned projects.

5. Assists in evaluating Initial Studies and reporting.

6. Documents project activity details and reports findings, both verbally and in writing, to the Supervisor.

7. Prepares maps and digital or handwritten records from monitoring assignments for data entry.

8. Conducts cultural resource inventories.

9. Ensures all culturally significant items are treated appropriately.

10. Participates in job-related training and conferences.

11. Prepares correspondence, reports, and other materials, as necessary.

12. Maintains confidential files and records.

13. Develop plans, reports, and complete tasks accurately and within stated timelines; collect, analyze, and report activity statistics; identify archaeological deposits and potential areas of

impact, and work with cultural resource teams to preserve and protect native burials and significant finds.

14. Examine and identify archaeological finds and assess their significance.

15. Carry out treatment and or inadvertent discovery plans that adhere to the strictest rules of confidentiality and discretion.

16. Performs other duties as assigned.

17. All employees are expected to follow the Tribal Personnel Policies and Procedures of the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians and adhere to any additional applicable addendums.

Qualifications

1. Five years of related work experience in site monitoring/archeological work.

2. Must be able to work under extreme heat and cold conditions.

3. Familiarity with construction practices and safety standards.

4. Ability to identify archaeological deposits and potential areas of impact, and work with cultural resource teams to preserve and protect native burials and significant finds.

5. Must be computer literate, have excellent analytical, oral, written, and organizational skills, and have working knowledge of current cultural Tribal and Federal laws and regulations.

6. Operate modern office equipment and Microsoft Office software with skill and efficiency.

7. Must be able to write reports and maintain files.

8. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

9. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record with the DMV, and be insurable under the Tribe’s policy.

10. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required.

11. Familiarity with database software, ArcGIS mapping software, or willing to learn new skills.

Environmental Conditions

Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical conditions necessary for office and field site visits. Bending, turning, reaching, grasping, standing, sitting, walking, ascending stairs, hiking in uneven terrain, occasional light to moderate, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
