Job Description

The Native Connections (NC) Project Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the federally funded (SAMHSA) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration project. Native Connections is a 5-year effort (07/31/2021- 07/30/2026) with the primary goals of preventing and reducing suicidal behavior and substance use, reducing the impact of trauma, and promoting mental health among American Indian/Alaska Native youth through the age of 24 years. It aims to reduce the impact of mental health and substance use disorders, foster culturally responsive models to reduce and respond to the impact of trauma on AI/AN communities, and allow AI/AN communities to support youth and young adults as they transition into adulthood by facilitating collaboration among agencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

The NC coordinator is responsible for assisting with the community readiness assessment and asset map development. This also includes supporting policy, procedure, and protocol development that promote coordination among services, follow up care, and postvention protocols. The NC coordinator will help the Project Director in the maintenance and oversight of the community-based planning process which includes soliciting input from a Native Youth Advisory Committee and the development and implementation of a Strategic Action Plan (SAP).

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science in Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Human Development, or related area of study
  2. Knowledge of Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)
  3. Cultural competency in working with Native American populations
  4. Knowledge of San Diego County Behavioral Health System
  5. Familiarity with community health clinics and/or Indian Health Clinics preferred
  6. Prior experience supervising volunteers, preferred
  7. Able to work independently and as part of a team, taking input and guidance from a variety of staff
  8. Must demonstrate knowledge of dynamics of and laws (Tribal, State, and Federal) crimes against children addressing
  9. Must be willing to adhere to the Tribe and Program’s confidentiality policy, maintain strict confidentiality of all community members seeking services, and the use of culture in healing
  10. Must demonstrate ongoing efforts to actively pursue a nonviolent lifestyle
